Getting Around Internet Censorship

TL;DR in yellow.

Depending on where you are (at work, a Gulf state, Australia, somewhere censored), you might be suffering from some Internet censorship, which sometimes over-censors. In other instances, content access is limited to specific regions which you are not in right now. This is not written with the intention of breaking rules or getting to improper material; discretion regarding how to use this info is entirely left to you.

Concept:You get beyond censorship by getting to blocked content/ blocked website as if you are another user. Meaning, your computer/mobile/tablet uses another computer/ server as a messenger. This is basically called a VPN (also referred to as "proxy"). Typically this other computer/ server is in not in a country that is censored like yourself, so it can open this video/ website, and then send this website to you. This is how it happens in a nutshell.

Types of VPN's according to price:

1. Paid VPN:
   Pay to pass. Should provide faster speeds for viewing.
2. Free VPN
   For free, usually slower.

Types of VPN's according to how you use them:

1. Through a website
2. Through a software you download and use

What to look for:

1. Countries in which the VPN's servers are
   If, for example, you want to watch BBC from the web and it is only available for people in the UK, you want to make sure that they have servers in the UK that you can use,
2. Speed
   Mainly, there is something called uplink speed, or generally the bandwidth. The faster the bandwidth, the faster the service you will get.
3. Security
   Don't ignore this. Generally speaking, the minimum precaution would be to ALWAYS browse in private/ incognito mode (press Control+Shift+P together in your browser).

Some Tried VPN's:

1. Ultrasurf (Windows, Linux) (Recommended)
   Free. Downloads a small software client to your PC. Works with Windows mainly and with a little tinkering can also work with Linux. Works well. Restricts access to pornographic material. All in all it is a great solution.
2. Mask My IP Platinum (Windows)
   Not free. Downloads a small software to your PC. Let's you select the country. A free version is also available.
3. Hidemyass.com (Web-based; should work on most devices)
   Free. A VPN through a website. Most countries now block it, but you may be in a territory that is still able to make use of it.
4. Tor Browser Bundle (Windows, Mac, Linux, Android as Orbot) (Recommended)
   Free. Downloads a small software client to your PC. Only tried it very recently and it seems to be working fine.
5. Hotspot Shield (Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iStuff)
   Free. Downloads a small software client to your PC. By far the most common tool. I personally think it is slow, but many people are satisfied with it. A paid "Elite" version is available that doesn't bug you with advertisements.
6. LogMeIn
   Free. Downloads a small software client to your PC.This works in a bit of a different way, where you will need to have another PC where you install another client. Then, you can connect from the PC behind the censorship wall to your other PC and do whatever you want. Great, simple. The only limitation is the bandwidth available at the later PC. 
7. TeamViewer (Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iStuff)
   Free. Downloads a small software client to your PC. Very similar concept to logMeIn. Vastly used by IT pros to provide support, but this is another way to use it.
8. Hideman VPN (Android)
   Free trial. Downloads a small software client to your PC. Not at all impressive performance in UAE, however depending on where you are you might get better results.
9. CTunnel (Web-based)  (Recommended) Similar to HideMyAss.
